How to teach the spirit of giving during the Christmas season

on December 13, 2012

Christmas snowmanIt’s that time of year — and there is no better time to teach your kids about the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year when we gather with our family and friends to enjoy each other’s company, good food and lots of wonderful presents.

But it is also a sad time of year for some that are not as fortunate. Perhaps they suffered a loss in their family, lost their job, or are in declining health. Maybe there isn’t enough money for food or presents to go around. It can be a very stressful time of year. It is important to expose kids to these truths and discuss things that they can do to make a difference.

Some ideas on how you can help teach your kids the spirit of giving:

  • Help your kids take up a collection in the neighbourhood for the local food bank
  • Have them bring their piggy bank to the shopping mall to donate to the Salvation Army
  • Make a trip to a nursing home and do some Christmas caroling
  • Help serve food at a homeless shelter
  • Put together a bag of toys and clothes to donate
  • Ask a neighbour or friend who is alone to join your family dinner
  • Bring some treats to an ailing relative in the hospital

We make the world a better place when we remember the true meaning of Christmas — love.

Great post! Thanks for the reminder that Christmas isn’t just about presents and parties. I’m a big believer in paying it forward, especially during difficult times of the year.

We would love to hear from you!
